VIRGINIA PREMIERE THEATRE Artistic considerations focus on plays of inherent social value, plays with a unique voice and plays with inherent theatricality. We prefer not to review plays that resemble television or film scripts. Virginia Premiere Theatre believes in the vital importance of the playwright to the American Theatre and to the art form in general. We offer reasonable royalties and guarantees as generally defined by industry standards. Housing, transportation and some rehearsal reimbursement are usually available. Virginia Premiere Theatre makes no attempt to "participate" in future playwright royalties; however, we do ask for your best efforts to ensure future playbill and publication credit. Should a play achieve financial success, we ask that playwrights consider making a generous donation to the not-for-profit company that gave the play its first push into sunlight. Please submit synopsis and letter of inquiry to:
THE WILLOWS THEATRE COMPANY Typically, The Willows Theatre Company produces at least one world premiere (or second production) in each season. Likewise, we produce many West Coast or Northern California premieres. We produce exclusively from contemporary American Theatre but will consider certain stylized plays and musicals which have a contemporary edge to them. How to submit your work:
Our cast sizes vary but we are not daunted by large casts. If you look at our production history, we typically will have 15 or more in each production. Please send materials to:
We compensate all of our performers and operate under a LORT-LOA contract with AEA. We are members of TCG, the Institute for Outdoor Drama, Theatre Bay Area, and the National Alliance of Musical Theatre. Please click here (http://www.willowstheatre.com/Performance_History/Performance_history_1975.htm) to see the list of past productions at the Willows. This should give you the best idea of what we produce. However, the NEXT great play may be yours, so please follow our guidelines and best of luck in your pursuits! http://www.willowstheatre.com/About_the_Willows/Script_Submission.htm PEAR AVENUE THEATRE In addition, each year we do a series of readings of full-length works in February or March, and then select at least one of them to include in next year's season as a full production. The selected work undergoes a development process, including workshops with dramaturgical assistance, before its premiere. Full-length submissions from Bay Area playwrights for possible readings and/or productions are welcome all year. Work should be no more than 8-10 characters (or no more than that number of actors with doubling) and producible on a black box stage in an intimate house (the Pear seats 40). It can have had previous readings, but should not have been produced elsewhere, even in an earlier version. Send a hard copy of the play with cover letter to:
DETROIT REPERTORY THEATRE We are interested in issue-oriented plays (a comedic approach is fine); 5 to 7 characters, no double casting; and we avoid plays that require children. No one-acts, please. Scripts should require a small cast, ideally six or fewer actors. We produce classic, contemporary and new theatre that encourages dialogue about the problems concerning the Philadelphia community. Through educational partnerships with local organizations and advocacy groups, we connect our audience to those individuals and groups that also seek solutions.” Present and explore a current social problem in a thought-provoking way that engages the audience and encourages discussion. The play should offer an opportunity for Simpatico to pursue a partnership with a nonprofit, advocacy, or educational organization. We do not accept electronic submissions. Please include contact information of playwright (email, address, and phone). A SASE may also be included for response letter. It is our desire to provide an opportunity to aspiring and established artists to develop socially relevant work. http://simpaticotheatre.org/page1168.html BABES WITH BLADES The first reading is internal and is attended by company members and the director; the playwright is invited but not sponsored. The second reading is by invitation and is attended by company members, the director, industry professionals and other invited guests; the playwright is invited but not sponsored. The final reading is an advertised public reading with one choreographed fight and a reception following the moderated talk back; the playwright's travel expenses will be sponsored up to $400 to attend. The playwright is given approximately two months between drafts for revisions with a schedule provided at the time of selection. Got a script we should see? Want more info? Contact newplays@BabesWithBlades.org BLACK SWAN THEATER The process is this: every two months (this may go to once a month, depending on response and energy), Black Swan will arrange a reading of a new script or scripts before an audience, to which the playwright will be invited. Response sheets will be given to director, performers, and audience to aid in the development of the play, and an audio recording will be made for the playwright if he/she cannot be in attendance. Especially promising scripts will undergo further development at Black Swan and at Highland Repertory Theater (our professional partner in this endeavor) toward the end of possible full production. No payment to the playwright during reading and development, but contracts negotiated for full productions. Submit your script for future readings! Send to: Please do not email scripts at this time. THE WOMEN’S THEATRE PROJECT As we enter our fourth season of theatrical works written exclusively by women, The Women’s Theatre Project continues to explore unique programming options. The Women's Theatre Project of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, produces plays by women, about women, for everyone. TWTP is seeking new full-length scripts with two or more characters by female playwrights. Female characters only. No musicals or children's scripts. Mail scripts to:

play,
a contract will be signed between the playwright and the company. This
contract is approved by the Dramatists Guild. *Genre: We prefer full length plays for submission. No translations or adaptations. On RARE occasions, Urban Stages will consider exceptional musicals and one-act plays that fit our mission. We ask that you please do not call or email our offices in the interim to inquire on the status of your play. * Plays Returned: The play should be accompanied by a manuscript size SASE with appropriate postage. If there is no manuscript size SASE, the play will not be returned. Please do not include loose cash, stamps, labels or metered postage. A SAS Post Card should be included if you want acknowledgment of arrival. If you do NOT want your manuscript returned, but want a response letter of our decision, include a #10 SASE. If no SASEs are included with your submission, it will be discarded at time of rejection. If we are interested in your play, we will contact you by phone or mail. "THE SECOND SHOW:" A musical that deals with any topic, so long as it can be presented in a fairly compact manner. We welcome musicals that deal with unconventional materials, and music that doesn't necessarily fit in the showtune range. If you feel you have a script that fits the criteria, please email it to PWTheatre@gmail.com, with the subject line: "New Submission—Play One/Two." We are able to accept some mp3 clips of music. Tom Berry, Producer THE DRAMA PLACE Todd Wallinger THE 7TH SIGN THEATER PRODUCTIONS The 7th Sign is dedicated to producing original works. More than welcome, original plays are a strong focus of The 7th Sign. Currently, each new season promises to bring (at least) one new play to the stage. The 7th Sign believes that new plays are essential for the future of progressive theatre, offering a direct insight to recent events. How to Submit a Play: It's simple. Send a Word-compatible document to: mail@7thsign.info Keep in mind that the company focuses on recent events and important social matters. This doesn't mean we only accept political plays or dark brow-furrowing dramas (though we happen to produce those, as well). Comedies, love-stories, experimental pieces, one-acts (you name it!), there's a place for it. And while that 'place' may not be as a 7th Sign production, we cannot foretell the distant future of following seasons, so keep your heads up and fingers working...We Need You! www.7thsign.info/submission.htm FRESH! presents FRESH NEW WORKS ON STAGE (CA writers only) Dedicated to new works with an emphasis on bringing California writers, actors, directors and audiences together in a vibrant new play collaborative. the subject line. This will help a great deal in sending your mail
to the right mailbox— Thanks. THE THEATER PROJECT’S PLAYWRIGHTS WORKSHOP, NJ There are openings for the monthly playwright’s workshop at The Theater Project, Union County College’s professional theater company. The Theater Project is particularly interested in writers who can contribute to the supportive process of play development as well as participate in its theatre community. This opportunity is a free service. Workshop meets once a month. In addition, there is a monthly script in hand public performance/ discussion of one of the plays in development. North Jersey playwrights interested in developing their work
through readings and critiques by actors, directors and other
writers should submit a fifteen page sample (full length or short
play), a SASE with a cover letter (please include an email
address), and a brief summary of writing background to: MAD RIVER THEATER WORKS We are seeking submissions of full-length or one-act plays or
adaptations that speak to the joy and heartbreak of everyday life.
We like writing that is daring, bold, passionate and imaginative.
We respond strongly to plays that challenge conventional structures
and ask us to hold on for the ride. We want to stretch the
boundaries of space and time. At the same time, we reach out to
audiences of all ages and economic levels: experienced theatergoers
and folks who wandered in off the street. Many of our plays are
historical but all must have a connection to current issues. Please
send synopsis and sample dialogue, not full scripts. Selected
scripts will be workshopped in our monthly staged reading series in
Yellow Springs, Ohio. Most of the works we produce are plays with
music, rather than musicals. A script should not have music in it
at the stage of submission… We would prefer to see work from
playwrights who are potentially interested in collaborating with
musicians if we decide to produce a work beyond a staged
reading. KUMU KAHUA THEATRE Kumu Kahua Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre company. We do prefer to have plays written by or include characters from the South Asian diaspora. Young and emerging writers as well as experienced and professional playwrights are encouraged to submit their work. You don't have to be South Asian to submit a play! It is encouraged that plays deal with either issues related to the South Asian subcontinent or South Asia in some literal or metaphorical way. If you feel your play doesn't exactly fit that bill but is only tangentially related to South Asia, submit anyway! REMEMBER: Scripts must be original, plays do not have to be contemporary and writers may submit more than one script.
