WHAT WE LOOK FOR:
We welcome all types of plays whether they are traditional (ie. August Wilson), conventional with a twist (ie. The Wiz), urban contemporary (ie. Tyler Perry), gospel, musical, comedy, classical, experimental or a new interpretation. We also strenuously encourage submissions from international artists.
Our goal is to deliver festival patrons quality plays long enough to satisfy their theatrical palate yet short enough to retain their desire to attend multiple performances. Quality is determined by 6 standards:
1. Crisp Dialogue
2. Savvy Construction
3. Satisfying Ending
4. Strong Character Development
5. Competent Producer
6. Production Value
Scripts:
We look for scripts whose framework consists of crisp dialogue which succinctly follow the protagonist's journey with strong turning points, in other words, a well told story. We also look for certain elements that indicate strong well developed & detailed characters that experience obstacles, conflict, crisis, climax, and/or resolve.
Producers:
Theatre is a collaboration of a team led by an organized professional. That's why you need a Producer. A Producer may or may not be the playwright, but the Producer must have experience in producing plays with the ability to be extremely flexible in a festival setting. There is no room for "diva" status in a festival. Your team's ability to load-in, perform on time & load-out directly effects the next show, the festival brand, and ultimately the experience of the patron. Competent Producers understand and govern their team with full consideration of other artists & their work. They consider other's work as important as their own and understand the magnitude of organizing a festival of this magnitude and its many working parts. A competent Producer also understands that change is the only constant in a theatre festival and embraces the need to be adaptable to make it all work together for the good of the patrons.
Obstacles:
Most restrictions & submission denials are not a result of artistic or entertainment value, but stem from limitations of feasibility for a festival production. The length the play, scenery, lighting requirements, & quick changeover demands will determine the production value of a play for this festival. Therefore, it is NOT unusual for a producer or playwright to present an abbreviated version of their production to fit festival criteria.
