Call for Submission

Northwest Drama Conference (NWDC) and Northwest Playwrights Alliance (NPA) announce a new play competition for students of NWDC affiliated Colleges and Universities. Unpublished short plays (ten minute or one act) written by students. All plays will be read by the professional playwrights who are members of the Northwest Playwrights Alliance. The winning play will be given a reading at the NWDC/KCACTF regional festival at the University of Idaho in February 2009 and one presented as a reading NPA at the Seattle Repertory Theatre in Seattle.

The Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Playwriting Contest was founded by its namesakes in 2004. Mario Fratti is the author of some 70 plays (the best-known being the award-winning musical Nine) which together have received a total of more than 600 productions internationally. Fred Newman is a philosopher, psychotherapist, political strategist, and author of over 30 postmodern political plays and musicals, and he is the retired artistic director of the Castillo Theatre.

Next Generation Playwriting Contest

Types of material: Full-length plays only. 1st place: $500 and a workshop production for the winner in our 2009-2010 season. Workshop production for overall winner in our 2008-2009 season. Finalists (4-6 plays) receive a public staged reading in NYC with a professional director and cast. Guidelines: No musicals or adaptations. Full length or long (60min and up) one-acts only. Unpublished original work only. Not produced professionally in NY, NJ or CT (Readings and workshops allowed if no press invited. See below for more details of what we’re looking for.)
