Today at The Center: Fellow Showcase Rehearsal

So I’m guessing you think the four PlayLabs plays are all the great theatre The Center could possibly handle right now. You’d be wrong. The Center is working with NINE additional playwrights this week as we prepare for the Jerome and McKnight Fellow Showcase.

The nine playwrights each selected a five-minute portion of a piece they are working on right now to present in the showcase. The pieces range from a comic scene between two artists who share the same love to a surreal image of natural disasters. One piece was emotional and traumatic as it recounted the harsh, painful memories of a former slave. Another was poetic and metaphoric, witnessing a woman deal with grief and loss of memory.

The rehearsals for each of these scenes where incredibly diverse, though may of the actors perform in multiple scenes. The Playwrights’ Center’s McKnight Theater Artist Shá Cage performed in many of the scenes, playing everything from a matter-of-fact (and unwittingly comic) doctor to free-spirited painter. The Showcase displays the range in skill of these performers as much as it shows of the variety and talent in this year’s Fellows.

Check out the Fellow Showcase this Saturday at 1 pm.
