Biography

Lesley Becker’s plays have been produced by Vermont Actor’s Repertory Theater, Island Stage, Vermont Playwright’s Theater and In-House Productions, and have had readings in Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Her plays are included in anthologies of short plays published by Smith and Kraus.

Lesley’s plays take a searching look at real-life cultural battles. Red and Blue, lays bare an old friendship torn apart by reproductive rights issues, and is being produced in Connecticut in 2024. The Popular Truth Game Show, a dramatic comedy with music, produced at The Brick in Brooklyn, N.Y.; in South Hero, Vermont by Island Stage; and at the Burlington Fringe Festival, lampoons T.V. games shows with a faux show where the host rewards guests not for correct answers, but for the answer that is most palatable to the audience. The Donors, a sci-fi screenplay exploring the ethics of human cloning, placed third at the Woods Hole Screenplay Competition in the science category.

She has produced collections of short original plays in Vermont, in 2023 “Tastings: An Evening of Short Plays” which was a site-specific and immersive event at two Vermont vineyards; in 2021 “Perceptions: An Evening of Short Plays” at Snow Farm Vineyard for Island Stage; and during covid was the festival director for an online event “Together in a Sudden Strangeness” produced by Vermont Actor’s Repertory Theater. She has directed numerous short plays in Vermont, and produced staged reading of her own work.

Twelve of her short plays have been produced by groups including Vermont Playwrights Circle, Vermont Actors Repertory Theater, and Island Stage. A full production and staged readings of full-length plays were presented at the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts in Burlington, Vermont.

Online playwriting workshops participation includes Roland Tec Writers Workshop: Lee Wochner’s Words That Speak workshops, Dan Calvisi’s Act Four screenwriting workshops, Gotham Writers workshops, and Will Dunn at Chicago Dramatists. Locally, she is a participates in sharing of work in progress at “Playmakers” at the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts in Burlington.

Her plays are on New Play Exchange. She’s a member of Dramatist Guild and the online writer’s group Wild Geese. She has degrees in music and law.

Successes

My play Champ at the Border will be included int the 2nd Annual Curtain Rising: Staged Reading of New Works "Home is where your [ ] is" on March 1st and 2nd, by The 2nd Stage at Burlington County Footlighters in Cinnaminson, New Jersey.
