Biography

Paula Cizmar is an award-winning playwright whose work has been produced off-Broadway, in the U.K., in Europe, and in regional theatres from Maine to California including Portland Stage, San Diego Rep, LaMaMa, The Jungle Theatre, American Place Theatre, Playwrights Arena, and the Women’s Project. Plays include: The Chisera, Bone Dry, The Death of a Miner, Still Life with Parrot & Monkey, Candy & Shelley Go to the Desert,  Ghost Dance on Mulholland, Street Stories, January, and Goat Springs Eternal. She is one of the authors of the internationally acclaimed documentary theatre piece, Seven, which explores the lives of women who take on the risks of working for human rights around the globe. Seven has been translated into 20+ languages and has been produced all over the world including in India, Argentina, France, England, Sweden, Japan, India, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Lithuania, Russia, Jordan, and the Balkans. It was selected for and presented at the 18th Istanbul International Theatre Festival and the upcoming 10th Women Playwrights International Conference in Capetown, South Africa.  She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a TCG/Mellon Foundation On the Road grant to research human trafficking for a new play combining documentary and fiction.
